Dr Bill Andrews interviewed by high-profile media doctor Ross Walker on Sydney’s 2UE

In 2015 Dr Bill Andrews was brought to Australia by One Truth Australia Pty Ltd to advance the awareness of Telomere technologies and spent some time talking to the local media.

Here is the transcript

Ross – Good Evening Bill

Bill – Good evening thank you for having me

Ross – Its a pleasure to have you here in Australia and I would love you to explain “What are Telomeres”

Bill – Telomeres are very small things that sit on the very tips of your chromosomes. Chromosomes are where all of our genes are that control all of our eye colour and hair colour. The very tips of the chromosomes are called Telomeres. Its kind of like a shoelace if you think about it. The tips on the ends of your shoelaces are equivalent to the tips on the ends of your Chromosomes.

Ross – So how do these Telomeres effect aging?

Bill – Well telomeres shorten as you age and the shortening seems to have an effect on gene expression. Its not totally understood how that happens but we were able to show twenty years ago that if we lengthen telomeres gene expression reverses to a young gene expression pattern. We did not know how but at least we knew that it did.

So did that a long time ago by using gene therapy techniques which really cannot be used for humans. Since then we have been trying to develop either synthetic or natural products that will help cause our cells to start producing its own elements to lengthen the telomeres.

That element is call telomerase. You have a gene for it but it is not turned on so we are looking for things that would start producing telomerase to lengthen the telomers.

Ross – Right so you so you’ve discovered a compound that does in fact effect telomeres. How did you discover the compound and what is it?

Bill – Ah well I’ll tell you after years and years of just random drug screening at first. We must have tested three hundred thousands different chemicals at random. Just looking at anything that stimulated cells to start producing telomerase.

We found our very first one in 2007 that was the fifty seven thousandth six hundred and sixty fourth chemical that we tested. That just opened the door to a lot of stuff because that allowed us to have a positive control.

So further screening was much simplified and much faster. at about three hundred and fourteen thousand eight hundred and eighteen we found a chemical that is in the products that we are talking about.

Ross – OK and so that chemical was from what? Most things come from something in nature. So I know for example there is one telomere lengthener called TA-65 comes from Astro Garless so where did your compound come from?

Bill – We first of all let me tell you that I played a role in developing TA-65. And I also did the Clinical Studies on TA-65 to show that it works.

But this is a synthetic chemical. Our efforts to due natural products have been successful a getting things that stimulate telomerase in human cells but not to the level that we really need see some really promising things.

So the synthetic chemical in the tests has show to be much safer than most natural products.

Ross – OK so what trials have been done on this chemical?

Bill – Well it was done at company call Abich
